Emerald (Panna) Gemstone: Complete Guide to Benefits, Identification, Quality & Wearing Method
Known as Markat in Sanskrit and Panna in Hindi, Emerald is a silicate of aluminum and beryllium. Emerald is a green gemstone that belongs to the beryl family.
This gemstone is very rare because it is very difficult to find a completely flawless emerald. Most emeralds have feather-like cracks and inclusions. Finding an emerald with a rich green color, perfect transparency, velvety reflection, and high specific gravity is quite difficult.
Aquamarine, Morganite, Goshenite, and Heliodor are also members of the beryl family and have similar chemical constituents, except that emerald contains chromic oxide, which gives it a green color and distinguishes it from other beryl varieties.
- Rich, homogeneous green color that is deep and pleasant, like a blade of fresh grass
- Retains its color and lustre in all kinds of light and shade
- Vitreous lustre, radiance, luminescence, and brilliance
- Velvety reflection
- Compactness, which gives it a high specific gravity
- High transparency, which makes it rarer and more costly than diamonds
- A soothing touch and a pleasant sight, which give off peaceful vibrations and attract the heart.
- Smoothness, which comes when the stone has a fine finish.
- Fine cut, which illuminates the stone from all sides.
According to Agastya Mat, mentioned in Ratna Prakash, a good emerald is transparent, dust-free, as pure as a drop of dew on a lotus leaf. When held in the palm of one's hand in sunlight, it sheds lustre in every direction.
Emerald is known for its luminous quality and is as radiant as the sun, just like the planet Mercury. Its specific gravity is 2.65 to 2.75, hardness is between 7.50 and 8, and refractive index is 1.56 to 1.59.
FLAWS OF EMERALDS (Panna's Defects)
- Brittleness (tendency to break easily)
- Lack of watery or glittering appearance; the stone appears dry and lifeless.
- Micaceous glitter is caused by mica; Mica particles are clearly visible.
- Hole
- Fissure or crack on the surface.
- Dullness, meaning no internal glow.
- Uneven color.
- Graininess.
- Odd shape, flatness, unevenness, or depression.
- Black or yellow spots.
- Foreign matter within the crystalline structure.
- Brown or blackish-yellow color.
- Harsh appearance.
- Smokiness.
- Emitting bluish reflections.
- Low specific gravity.
- Concavity or dent on the surface.
Such stones have no merit and should be discarded. Real emeralds of good size are very rare, and finding a completely eyeglass-clear emerald is almost impossible. Emerald is also known for its power to neutralize poisons.
IDENTIFICATION OF REAL EMERALD GEMSTONE
- If a real emerald gemstone is placed in a glass vessel filled with water, it radiates green light, whereas an imitation emerald does not.
- If a real emerald is placed on a white cloth in such a way that its reflected light is visible, it reflects green light, and where the light falls, a green patch appears on the cloth.
- When a real emerald is placed on the eyes, it gives a cooling sensation, whereas an imitation emerald heats up very quickly.
- If an imitation emerald is rubbed against turmeric root, it turns red, while a real emerald does not.
- A drop of water placed on a real emerald retains its shape and does not spread.
- Rubbing an imitation emerald against a piece of wood makes it shinier, while a real emerald does not notice any noticeable change.
- Imitation emeralds often have white spots.
- Imitation emeralds have a brighter color, while genuine emeralds have a softer and more natural shade.
- The specific gravity of imitation emeralds is lower than that of genuine emeralds.
- The refractive index of imitation emeralds is lower than that of genuine gemstones.
CLASSIFICATION OF EMERALDS
